Two annual scholarships are provided to LGBTQ student applicants. Find more information on each scholarship below:

Dockendorff Scholarship

Robert (Bob) D. Dockendorff received an A.A. from Burlington Community College in 1958 and graduated from The University of Iowa in 1960 with a B.A. in Sociology. He joined the Naval Reserve and continued graduate studies at the University of Iowa for several years. In 1964, Mr. Dockendorff applied for Naval Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was assigned to small boat operations in Vietnam. He remained in the Navy Ready Reserve and retired with the rank of Captain in 1988 after 25 years of service. In 1968, Mr. Dockendorff was hired by Pacific Maritime Association where he worked for 35 years, retiring as a Vice President in 2003. He lives in San Francisco, CA and continues working on transportation and infrastructure projects. He is also developing a series of documentary film projects. He is active with charitable organizations promoting social change.

Award

Four eligible students will receive $5,000 that will apply to the Spring 2022 semester.

Eligibility

  • Students who identify as LGBTQ, with preference given to African American, Latinx, and Native American students
  • Students who contribute to diversity efforts on the University of Iowa campus
  • Students who are residents of either Iowa or Illinois
  • Students who demonstrate financial need
  • Students must be in good academic standing (have a minimum of 2.0 cumulative GPA)

Rainbow Scholarship

The funding for the Rainbow Scholarship was established by Martin D. Sokoll, MD, who was a professor in the University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia for several years.

Award

The recipient of this award will receive $2,500 that will apply to the Spring 2022 semester.

Eligibility

  • Students who identify as LGBTQ
  • Students who graduated from an Iowa high school
  • Students who demonstrate financial need
  • Students must be in good academic standing (have a minimum of 2.0 cumulative GPA)

  1. University of Iowa Transcript
  2. A completed essay (no longer than 1000 words, typed double-spaced) sharing your involvement with diversity initiatives on the University of Iowa campus, and your educational and career goals.

Deadline

Applications, complete with all required materials, are due no later than 11:59pm on Monday, March 28, 2022.

Selection

Recipients shall be determined be a selection committee made up of University of Iowa staff and faculty, in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid. Recipients will be notified no later than Friday, April 8, 2022.
