The María Cano Martínez Service Award, established by University of Iowa Chicanx/Latinx alumni and students in 1982, is named in honor of María Cano Martínez, a dedicated University of Iowa and Iowa City community member. María Cano Martínez is described as having been a social worker, friend, confidant, and an encouragement to the Spanish speaking community to pursue higher education. In honor of her commitment and legacy left at the University of Iowa, this scholarship was established to promote understanding and the study of Chicanx/Latinx issues by providing funds, annually, for a student who promotes understanding through scholarly activity or working with Chicanx/Latinx organization on campus or in the community.
